Oct 25, 2009All about how your favorite brand, Chanel, started its fame; How was Gabrielle Chanel different from other women in the 1900s fashion society? The influence of Chanel has been enormous to every fashion designer in the fashion empire. Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, also called, Coco Chanel was a genius behind this empire. She was distinctive. Coco Chanel had never given up inachieving her dream with great determination despite the fact that she was an orphan from a low-class.
Unlike those of other females at the time, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel had her own strong personality and willpower. She didn’t care about what other people thought about her unique style. There were three main reasons that Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was a success as a well-known designer in the fashion world. First, she had her own style, which was different from that of the trend back in the late 1800s and early 1900s (Lewis, Jone Johnson). Second, Coco was very stubborn, which enabled her to become a lofty and extraordinary person. Lastly, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel persistently followed her dream and focused on making sure that she made a right decision for becoming what she wanted (Zeimer, Juloa)
The fact that Chanel had her own style wasn’t so easily acceptable at this time of the society. There was a strong distinction among social classes such as nobles and peasants, and it was extremely difficult for peasants to stand out in the society. Not only the fact that Coco Chanel was a woman without rights and wealth, but also the fact that the nobles treated her unfairly stimulated her to become a success (Alice, Fashion). For instance, she believed that her sister, Julian Chanel, could not marry her fiancé due to her social status. The fiancé’s parents did not allow the marriage to the lower class. This impacted on Coco Chanel to think that marriage was a misery (Walls, Kate). Overall, as a woman of the past when discrimination on gender and class existed, Coco Chanel had the most unique and distinct personality (Inoue, Mizuho). Another example could be the fashion code that she had. In her times, there was a particular fashion trend among women in the society. Females tended to wear corsets underneath their dresses, and wore fancy dresses that exposed their feminine body figures (Stanton, Michael). However, Coco Chanel didn’t want to follow the conventional trend. She thought that exposing so much of a woman’s body was not the only way to show a woman’s true beauty (Zeimer, Juloa). She claimed that showing a very small part of the body of a woman would be more attractive to men. Furthermore, no one could ever possibly imagine women in pants, but Coco Chanel wore black tight pants for horseback riding, which made everyone get surprised (Zeimer, Juloa). Overall, Coco Chanel’s unique style was wearing a simple dress with elegance, which was quite different from that of most other women at that time (Lewis, Jone Johnson). Coco Chanel’s opinion of fashion gave great impact on the society. She would do anything to achieve her dream of becoming a famous designer, whom everyone would respect properly. Coco Chanel could sacrifice anything to achieve her goal. During the late 1800s, most of the women in this society stayed home doing house chores (Stanton, Michael). They had no ambition to become professionals in a certain area. Nevertheless, Coco Chanel made her implausible dream possible.

Genre 2 Introduction: The second genre is a journal entry from Coco Chanel's perspective. Due to the fact that Coco Chanel is such a significant character that has gone through many miseries and experiences, a diary entry would work well for answering the question-how was Coco Chanel different from other women in the 1900s fashion society. For instance, the diary entry could be referred to the biography of Coco Chanel on how she felt as a woman back in the 20th century, and on how people treated her for not being a prior classed person by expressing more of personal opinions of herself. The audience can comprehend well about how Chanel has a distinct personality throughout the writing. Genre 2: The following is a journal entry is written by Coco Chanel(1883-1971) when she is nearly fifty years old. This writing is after Coco Chanel has gone through all hardships and later been recognized as a famous woman designer of a fashion empire.
Oct 29, 1931 Dear Diary,
Today, a mail gave me a huge excitement. It was an invitation to a party from the Duke of Westminster. He requested me to bring some of my hats, perfumes (Chanel No.5) and piles of clothes of my own design. I was honored. Although I have suffered as a woman and a daughter of a small-wares paddler, I became famous among the noblesse in the end. That means, I am treated well with proper respect.
About ten years ago, I didn’t understand the reason that people were so biased towards women who dressed in casual style such as pants. I have persistently denied conventional fashion style. Twenty-two years ago when I just opened a milliner, people regarded me as a designer with very strange taste of fashion, but they came to love my fancy looking hats. Back in the 1916s, women used to wear long fancy laced dresses with corsets, but I designed loose-fitting chemise dresses with belts at the hips, and I made casual skirts from men’s jerseys. This major difference in style was what made me distinctive from other designers.
There is an episode about the pants. In the past when I was in my twenties, I lived with a horse breeder named Etienne Balsan. He used to take me to the horseback-riding place every weekend or so. One time he took me for a horseback-riding show on a sunshiny day. At that place, women were wearing various colored dresses with layers of lace. On the other hand, I simply wore a pair of black tight pants with an ivory blouse tucked into it. For some reasons, people were shocked at the fact that I was wearing such an outrageous costume. They thought I had lost my mind, and soon enough, I heard a plethora of criticisms from people all around me. I, however, tried to ignore what the others said, as I did not mind at all. In order to be a leading fashion designer, I believed that I had to possess an original sense of fashion with unique sense of art style.
As of today, it is just stunning that people are not as biased as they used to be. The Duke of Westminster inviting me to the most prestigious party with a selected number of the noble explains that I have been recognized for my work. Not only my extreme effort about fashion, but also the fact that people are less prejudiced gave me a recognition as a fashion designer. Now I am glad to obtain fame and respect from all people regardless of class distinction. My fashion items have become a desire of people in higher society, but my dream and their dreams of fashion should go on without any interruption. Sincerely, Coco. Genre 3 Introduction:
Life of Coco Chanel can be divided into several stages. During her life time, she once enjoyed success and glory, but in the other time she cried in despair. A time line of Coco Chanel's life can systematically represent major events of her life. I include major events of her life in the time line from the day she was born, through her adolescent period, and until the day she died after enjoying such popularity.
Multi-Genre Project was a big task including three genres, and I learned various strategies to answer one specific question that I was interested in. At first I was struggling between two topics; basic biography of Coco Chanel and current even such as the death of Korean president, No Muhyun. These two topics were totally different in terms of genre, and I have realized that the death of Korean president was not so appealing to me in researching for the next couple of months. I am glad I have ended up within a topic which I was truly interested in. There were three sub-projects to the question, 'How was Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel different from other women in the 1900s' fashion society?' For the first genre, I had to write a research paper with in-text citations. I had to research for a more reliable secondary sources and think deeper for every sentence I wrote to answer my topic question. For the second genre, I decided to write a diary entry from Coco Chanel's perspective. This was rather a casual writing due to the fact that it is a letter and I was able to talk less formally in Chanel's voice. I still did not forget to answer why Coco Chanel was a rare success in the 1900s fashion society. Lastly, the third genre was a timeline. Time line included only important events that happened in Coco Chanel's lifetime. These events could be defined as evidences to prove that Coco Chanel was unique. After my audiences read over my multi-genre project, I hope they get some interesting facts about who Coco Chanel is, and how she was different from other female fashion designers in the 1900s. I appreciate all of my readers and hope they have learned the significance of the women's favorite brand, Chanel.
